Pawel Grabowski

Pawel GrabowskiWhy did you choose a career in copywriting and how did you get into it?

I have always loved to write and secretly dreamt of becoming a writer. But I guess I took an unusual route to achieving it. In short, I ran a software company and used to write all our promotional copy and content. And then a couple of years later I found myself writing copy for other software companies for a living.

What work are you most proud of?

Website copy I recently wrote for a well-known social media analytics platform. Seeing it on screen for the first time was quite an experience.

What piece of copy do you really wish you’d written?

Way too many to mention. Like many of my colleagues I’m sure, I have plenty of those “man, I wish I wrote that!” moments.

What do you do if you hit a bit of writer’s block?

I have a few tricks for it. I go for a walk. Or grab my laptop and move to work in another room, for instance. And then at times I just give up and come back to writing the next day.

What are your favourite and least favourite writing-related tasks?

Favs: Finding that perfect sentence to open up a piece with.

No so fav: Admin stuff. Obviously.

Any copywriting pet hates?

Per word rate… I know, not entirely copy related but that’s the first thing that came to mind so…

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve been given?

Hustle. You can’t get anywhere unless you focus on the goal, knock down barriers and sometimes do stuff you’re not 100% comfortable with (ie cold call etc).

What advice would you give to people starting out on a copywriting career?

Write everything and on any topic. And then see what has worked best for you, what you enjoyed the most, and…specialise.
