The Best Christmas Movie Destinations

This blog first appeared on Trek America.

Ah… Christmas movies. Putting your feet up with a cup of hot chocolate and scrolling through your festive Netflix movie list on a cold winter night is nothing short of perfection. Their iconic soundtracks put us firmly in a Christmassy mood, and some are set in our all-time favourite Trek America destinations. Check out our top Christmas movie list below, and who knows, maybe it will be the inspiration you need to start planning for the ultimate American road trip in 2020!

Elf

Honestly, who can watch Elf without getting serious wanderlust to visit the Big Apple during the Christmas season – pass the candy corn and pop tart spaghetti please! And while we love the Christmas lights along Fifth Avenue and Rockefeller Centre ice skating in the snow, we can’t deny that the iconic bright lights of New York City is a fantastic destination to visit all year round. Our Freedom Trail trip visits New York last on the itinerary, so you can maybe add on a couple of cheeky days to soak the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and Central Park to end your incredible trip on a high.

Home Alone

Remember the (slightly neglectful) mom desperately finding her way back to Kevin in Chicago on a road trip across the USA? Our Northern Trail from Los Angeles trip is much less stressful than her journey, but no less adventurous, travelling from California and hopping through another nine states from the West Coast to East Coast, stopping off at Chicago to discover the Windy city by bike and devouring its famous deep-dish pizza.

Die Hard

Some say it can’t be Christmas without watching Die Hard. And who are we to argue? It’s set on Christmas Eve, after all. With high octane scenes set in Los Angeles (the fictional Nakatomi Tower is the Fox Plaza tower on Avenue of the Stars), it’s an annual reminder of how much we love La La Land. Our epic Western Wonder trip starts in LA before heading out to the Arizona desert, taking in the mayhem of Las Vegas before finishing up in Yosemite and the Golden Gate Bridge of San Fran!

Die Hard 2: Die Harder

Why stop at one Die Hard when you can have two? In the second instalment, hero John McClane returns, this time in Washington DC. Get your fix of this power house city on our guided tour, seeing the buildings of the Smithsonian Museums and the White House during the East Coast Plus adventure. You’ll travel north to south on this action-packed 8-day trip, also cramming in Philly, Wilmington (hello craft beer), Savannah, the House of Mouse in Orlando, ending the adventure in the bustling streets of New Orleans.

The Holiday

As much as we love Kate Winslet’s cosy English cottage in The Holiday, we’d sooner move into the Californian pad owned by Cameron Diaz’s character in San Marino, northeast of LA. To live the California way of life (if only for a few days) take the Grand Dame of American road trips, The Great 48, visiting a whopping 48 states over an unforgettable 75 days, and you’ll visit LA where The Holiday was set on day 64.

With so many epic festive movies to choose from during the Christmas season, we can’t help but start scheming for our very own American road trip in 2020 and beyond. After all, Trek is for life, not just for Christmas.
