It used to be so simple. Everyone knew their place in the classic 5-step, linear marketing funnel process. Customers dutifully followed the rules and moved along it, taking each step in turn and having very little choice in the matter. Everyone had their jobs to do at the pertinent points to convert enquiries and leads into confirmed, paying customers.
