I’ve just responded to a US writer who asked why we are solely focused on the UK, and I thought I’d share the reasons with members.
Our aim is to keep PCN focused and relevant for UK writers, who are our most natural target group. With a UK focus, we can cover lots of different issues without getting bogged down in the cultural and commercial differences between countries. We can also offer news and job listings that are more likely to be of interest to members.
While every writer has something in common with every other writer, there’s clearly a big difference between the commercial writing scene in the UK and those of India or China, for example. That has implications when we get into areas like minimum recommended rates, which is a major part of what we’re hoping to achieve with PCN.
Resource is an issue too. As things stand, PCN is being managed by me and Ben Locker, with a little freelance help. We hope to create an organisation that can represent UK copywriters at some level â€“ but including every copywriter in the world might be a bit of a stretch!
However, we are open to applications from anyone who serves the UK market, regardless of where they’re based â€“ since they would be dealing with most of the issues faced by UK copywriters.
