What does it mean to be freelance?

Freelancers are independent, self-employed professionals. As a freelancer, you are essentially a micro-business, offering your services to other organisations.

Freelancers get to choose who they work with, when they work, where they work, and how they conduct their business.

But while freelancing gives you a great deal of flexibility and freedom, you lose some of the security and certainty that comes from having a full-time or part-time job.

Many would argue that the sense of security that many employees have is illusory; the truth is that no job is guaranteed.

And as a freelancer you have the power to correct your mistakes or try new things if your career starts to flounder. This is rarely true of regular employment.

The manifold challenges of freelancing

Freelancing will challenge you.

It’ll force you to gain new skills and stretch your talents. You will become your own accounts department, administrator, tech support, marketing department and sales team.

You will do it all – or hire others to do it for you.

But don’t worry if you’re not adept in these areas now. These are all skills and qualities that you can accumulate over time – or delegate.
