How do you work as a copywriter?

This helps us show you the right requirements. Some standards apply only to independent practitioners.

Not sure? If you invoice clients directly for your copywriting services, you're an independent practitioner.

Confirm your experience

Pro+ membership is for copywriters with professional experience.

What counts as equivalent experience?

Equivalent experience might include:

  • Completing a recognised copywriting programme or qualification
  • Working in a related field such as journalism, marketing communications, or content writing
  • Significant mentored practice under an experienced copywriter
  • A combination of formal training and practical experience

We trust your professional judgement. If you believe you have equivalent competence, we welcome your application.

You're all set for this step

As an employed copywriter, you don't have additional requirements.

The independent practice standards (insurance, contracts, etc.) are for freelancers and agencies. You're only required to follow the core standards in Part 1.

Professional insurance

Independent practitioners subscribing to the Code must hold professional indemnity insurance.

About insurance requirements

Professional indemnity insurance protects you and your clients if something goes wrong with your work. It covers claims arising from mistakes, negligence, or breach of professional duty.

Public liability insurance is also required if you meet clients in person or work from premises other than your own home.

Cyber insurance is recommended if you:

  • Store client data or sensitive documents on your own devices
  • Work in regulated sectors (healthcare, financial services, legal)
  • Input confidential information into AI tools or third-party platforms
  • Manage client websites, email systems or digital assets

Need insurance? Many providers offer policies for freelance writers from around 100-150 GBP per year.

Continuing professional development

Pro+ members commit to ongoing learning and development.

What counts as CPD?

Structured learning (minimum 5 hours):

  • Courses, workshops, and webinars
  • Conferences and industry events
  • Formal training programmes
  • Accredited qualifications

Other CPD activities:

  • Reading industry publications and books
  • Peer review and feedback sessions
  • Mentoring others
  • Self-study and online resources
  • Reflective practice and portfolio review
  • Writing about your craft (blogging, speaking)

We provide CPD tracking tools and guidance to help you meet this commitment.

Accountability

Pro+ members are accountable to The Copywriter Code.

How enforcement works

The accountability process focuses on dialogue, learning and resolution - not punishment.

Most concerns are resolved through conversation. The Standards Committee only becomes involved when concerns are raised formally, and even then, the focus is on understanding what happened and preventing future issues.

Formal sanctions (like suspension or removal of Pro+ status) are reserved for serious or repeated breaches where a member shows disregard for professional standards.
