Zappy Copy

Why did you choose a career in copywriting and how did you get into it?

I joined a business start-up group and spent a lot of time trying to find a business I could start that resonated with me.

I chose copywriting as I love to sit and write and because many of the people alongside me in that group inspired me. Working with these people and helping them grow their businesses is what I wanted to do.

What work are you most proud of?

I’m quite new to the world of copywriting so I’d have to say my first job. I was asked by a business training company to write some emails for their list. These were emails that were to be entertaining and build a relationship. It was really good fun and got me hungry for more.

What piece of copy do you wish you had written?

Hands down the script for the famous Old Spice advert, “Look at your man, now back to me, sadly he isn’t me”. And sadly, I didn’t write this.

What do you do if you hit a bit of writer’s block?

I try to just brain dump onto a bit of paper or word document. Get every little thing out of my head and see if that gets me going. If I’m still stuck, I get away from the desk and change the scenery. Go for a walk, a run or pop to the shops for some M&M’s.

What are your favourite and least favourite writing-related tasks?

My least favourite is probably my own content on social media. It’s just something I sometimes easily let slip as I try and focus on other things.

My favourite has to be writing emails for clients. The anticipation of the results they’ve had afterwards and also the testing and split testing involved is good fun.

Any copywriting pet hates?

Copywriting Guru’s who claim that you can charge thousands straight off the back of their courses etc.

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve been given?

Don’t get attached to your work. You work for the client and so focus on serving and delivering for them.

What advice would you give to people starting out on a copywriting career?

I would say to broaden your learning beyond just copywriting. There are lots of great ways to learn great copywriting but there are also many other topic areas that can really help you grow as a copywriter.
