Why did you choose a career in copywriting and how did you get into it?

I’ve loved writing since I was eight years old.

I started out in magazine journalism and naturally moved into digital content as the industry changed. Marketing followed, so I’ve combined my writing skills with more promotional content.

What work are you most proud of?

I’m proud of explorative research pieces I’ve written, for example, a very thorough analysis of exporting to the Japanese market.

There’s a lot of personal content I’ve written too, which I share on my Medium account – that seems to have struck a chord with many readers.

What piece of copy do you really wish you’d written?

Short and sweet but I love the recent Spotify campaigns e.g. “Smashing Pumpkins. Smashing avocados”. So funny and nostalgic!

What do you do if you hit a bit of writer’s block?

Step away from the computer. Always. A glaring screen is not going to help. I might go and grab a coffee, take a bath or do some yoga. Certainly nothing digital.

What are your favourite and least and favourite writing-related tasks?

I love the chance to really research a topic in-depth, particularly if I’m interviewing someone. Metadata and product descriptions can be a little tedious but it largely depends on the product.

Any copywriting pet hates?

Overuse of exclamation marks and sentences that make you pass out. I always run my copy through the Hemingway App to make sure it’s not too long-winded.

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve been given?

I often see this phrase: “It took me 10 years to learn how to do that job in 10 minutes. You owe me for the years, not for the minutes.” I love that – never work with anybody who undervalues you.

What advice would you give to people starting out on a copywriting career?

Build your portfolio and your confidence will build with it. At first, you might let yourself slip into bad habits of undercharging, but this is a means to an end if it builds your portfolio.

Once you have a demonstrable record of work, you can pitch to new clients with confidence.

Why do you find ProCopywriters membership useful?

I have already had new clients through ProCopywriters. I also love the knowledge they share – in particular, the annual report. It’s lovely to know we’re not alone!
