About this project
This was written at the end of 2021, when the crypto world looked and felt a bit rosier than it does at the end of 2022. Contis and its various agencies had attempted to put together a white paper on the future of crypto and its potential to go mainstream. But the first writers hadn't grasped the technology or the story, and had got themselves stuck in that nasty vicious spiral where every attempt to improve just makes it worse. So they handed it over to me. The initial plan was to edit it into shape, but it soon became clear that it needed a complete overhaul. We kept the initial research but not much else: we started again with story, text and tone to create a much clearer and comprehensive paper. The result was a very happy client, with a solid piece of content.

Whether you are an evangelist or a sceptic, cryptocurrency has become the unavoidable topic in global finance. But it has not always been viewed as relevant by those operating outside the world of highly speculative investment or Silicon Valley utopianism.
However, while ‘crypto’ continues to attract more than its fair share of detractors, and both its fans and its opponents kick up a lot of very public heat and noise, a quiet transformation has been taking place. Cryptocurrencies – and the world of decentralised finance (DeFi) for which they are leading the charge – are starting to show their worth as spendable assets.
