Post-Trade Survey Report for Meritsoft

Meritsoft provides a much-needed automated platform for the back office at major capital markets houses. It's a pretty technical and not especially glamorous part of the investment world that has been overlooked for a bit too long - as we set out to explain in this report. Using proprietary research as the framework, we built a three-part story that rose above the nitty-gritty of technical details and helped explain the need for Meritsoft's services while still providing the reassurance that the problem is entirely solvable. 12 months on the report is still a major piece of marketing collateral for Meritsoft.

About the project

For an openly acknowledged problem, the true cost of post-trade processing for brokerage fees and billing has resisted measurement and quantification. Until now. Based on extensive research among leading banks and inter-dealer brokers across Europe and North America, this report shows the eye-watering damage that inefficient legacy systems, lack of automation, and the inability to persist data through the workflow has on profitability at these firms.

Focusing specifically on brokerage, clearing, custody and exchange costs (BCE), our research shows that these trade expenses can reach up to $750 million for the majority of banks surveyed. It shows that trade expenses have reduced profits by up to 20 percent. And it shows that brokerage-related fees are a top-three business expense for almost every participating organisation.

As for the effect on the front office, the inability to negotiate rates effectively, allocate capital with confidence, or provide seamless customer service around billings and payments have all had a detrimental effect. The limitations of back office solutions obscure the most essential of insights: the cost of carrying out current business and the true price of business growth.

Crypto Currency White Paper for Contis

This was written at the end of 2021, when the crypto world looked and felt a bit rosier than it does at the end of 2022. Contis and its various agencies had attempted to put together a white paper on the future of crypto and its potential to go mainstream. But the first writers hadn't grasped the technology or the story, and had got themselves stuck in that nasty vicious spiral where every attempt to improve just makes it worse. So they handed it over to me. The initial plan was to edit it into shape, but it soon became clear that it needed a complete overhaul. We kept the initial research but not much else: we started again with story, text and tone to create a much clearer and comprehensive paper. The result was a very happy client, with a solid piece of content.

Financial Diversity Radar for findexable

Findexable is a global research and analytics firm on a mission to digitise investment in fast-growth and private-market fintech. Together, we worked with a global team of sector experts, NGO representatives, and data scientists, graphic designers, and PR consultants to create the first ever financial diversity radar – a unique combination of qualitative and quantitative insights designed to give women in fintech a voice, and find practical solutions to the problem of their under-representation. The resulting 100-page report helped kick-start an international conversation about this essential topic.

Banking Circle Report on Financial inclusion for European SMEs

Banking Circle provides B2B banking services around the world. It's a key player in the fintech revolution and in this report wanted to address a key market that has long been underserved by traditional banking services - small and medium businesses. Working with the team from comms agency Magna Carta, we interviewed a series of industry commentators, customers, fellow fintechs and SME owners, and then looked for the numbers to back up their thoughts. There were plenty out there - to prove that Banking Circle's premise was spot on. I then turned all this information into a cohesive report (with plenty of circular metaphors throughout - very proud of the carousel of collaboration!) that the target audience would read and get behind. The result was an uptick in interest for Banking Circle - and repeat business for Magna Carta.
