Skills guide for the CIPR

The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) provides a wide range of services and resources for members. The Writing for Online Audiences skills guide shows PR professionals the truth behind writing for online audiences, the myths and the golden rules.

About the project

Writing for online audiences

While media relations remains a critical part of public relations, online platforms have made it possible for PR practitioners to cut out the ‘middle man’ and reach their target audiences directly via websites, blog posts, emailers, social media posts, video footage, infographics and other online content.

This Skills Guide looks at what – if anything – makes writing for online audiences different and how to ensure that your online copy is read, understood and acted upon.

Is online writing really that different?

Type the words ‘writing for the web’ into Google and up will pop around 739,000,000 results in 0.41 seconds. It’s clear that just about every academic institution, training course provider and professional writer has an awful lot to say on the subject.

But is all of this special attention really necessary? Surely good writing is good writing. Is online writing really that different to writing for any other medium?

Launch prospectus for The Manual

I was asked to write the copy for a launch prospectus for The Manual - a new Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) investment opportunity in the entertainment sector. The copy came out of a number of meetings with the directors and business consultant. The aim of the prospectus was to both interest and excite potential investors with the concept while assuring them of a sound financial investment.

Sovereign tone of voice documents

Sovereign Housing wanted to adopt a consistent tone of voice when dealing with its diverse range of audiences. It felt that too many of its resident communications were too formal and too full of jargon. I worked with Sovereign's in-house communication team to first create the Sovereign tone of voice then write the comprehensive guide. I also run training courses for Sovereign employees on how to use the tone of voice in internal and external documents.
