Top 10 reasons for choosing Weston College

There are loads of great reasons why you should study at Weston College. Here’s our top ten.

1 Top results - Our degree pass rate is 99% and 100% at honours level. Of those, 22% achieved first class honours, which is 6% above the national average.

2 Great employment prospects - Of our 2012 graduates, 99% were employed within six months. In addition, 65% found jobs in an area related to their degree, compared to 65% nationally. We work with business partners and blend academic study with work-based learning to make you more employable.

3 Best in the South West - The Quality Assurance Agency recognised us as the top-performing college in the South West, and in the UK’s top five for Higher Education provision.

4 Fantastic facilities - In recent years, we’ve invested millions in modern, state-of-the-art equipment and facilities for our students which are generally industry-standard.

5 Industry-experienced staff - Our passionate staff have all been employed within their relevant sectors – the majority remain active – so you can be confident your teaching will be informed by the latest developments in the industry.

6 Work placements - Work placements related to your chosen career are part and parcel of your degree. For example, our students have undertaken placements at companies such as Aardman Animations, Bristol Airport and the National Trust.

7 International opportunities - You will receive ample opportunities to work and travel abroad as part of your course. Recent destinations include Berlin, Poland, The Gambia, Gibraltar and Las Vegas.

8 Tutor contact time - Our students receive excellent levels of tutor access and support. Also, your personal tutor will get to know you and arrange regular meetings.

9 Flexible learning - Our full and part-time programmes allow you to fit study around work and family commitments. We make use of the latest technology to enhance your learning and enable you to access study materials off-site.

10 Celebrating your success - Every year hundreds of people attend our graduation ceremonies, where families and friends proudly celebrate the many achievements of our students.

Living the student life

We want you to achieve fantastic grades, but we also want to make sure you have a great time – from the moment you start to the day you finish being a Weston College student.

Freshers’ Week - Like any university, we start with a Freshers’ Week. This is a way of introducing you to life in Weston-super-Mare, your partner university and other students. We’ll make sure that you have fun, make friends and ease yourself into the academic side of life by getting to know your tutors and course mates.

Join the union - One of the benefits of being a student is that you can become a member of the National Union of Students (NUS) and Weston College’s Student Union. The Student Union assists, provides services for and represents all our students.

You’ll also become a member of the union at your university. This means you can use their facilities and services, join sports teams and participate in loads of clubs and societies. Both our partner universities put on lots of exciting events during Freshers’ Week, which usually ends with a Freshers’ Ball.

Student voice - We take student views very seriously and want to make sure we listen and respond to your opinions and feedback. There are plenty of ways to get involved. Every course elects student representatives from each year to attend meetings and have an input into how your course and the College are run.

All students are invited to provide feedback on their courses/modules. We also elect higher education reps within the Student Union. They go to important meetings with the College’s corporate and senior managers. We also have a student engagement officer, who will encourage you to have your say, raise any issues you have and make suggestions to enhance your experience. You don’t need to make an appointment – just pop into the office.

While we hope you’ll never need to use it, there’s a system in place for you to make a complaint if you aren’t happy with any part of your experience at Weston College.

Weston College website

Weston College is one of the leading further education establishments in the west of England. To reflect its standing in the region and reach out to its expanding target audience, the college's website underwent a major re-design. My task was to produce content for the new site, including landing pages aimed at the college's key audience - school leavers, undergraduates and adult students.

Student ‘I’ve made it’ profiles

I came up with the concept, interviewed students and wrote copy for this college campaign. It shows how former students have gone on to successful careers after progressing through the college. The profiles were used in the college's prospectus and on posters, which were displayed in each campus.

Sports writing

I have ten years’ experience as a journalist, including five as sports editor of a regional newspaper – the Somerset County Gazette. I was responsible for writing and editing sports stories, features and match reports. This included finding new angles for stories, researching articles and carrying out interviews. This experience has allowed me to develop into a highly proficient sports writer, able to find and produce appealing articles that give readers an extra insight.
