A Wikipedia-beating blog at the top of Google

Spreading the word about key conservation law The charity Friends of the Lake District wanted to get a blog at the top of Google, or at least on the first page of results. By becoming the leading reference point for one of the founding tenets of National Park management, it would help raise awareness. Especially for their Save Our Lake District campaign. Their target audience: visitors, residents, potential partner organisations, journalists and influencers. You can never guarantee a top spot in Google, as you can’t control what competing pages are doing. But it was such a niche subject I thought we stood a good chance.

Website rewrite for Social Bite — a pioneering homelessness charity

It all started with a coffee shop. Now, it’s a movement with a mission. Social Bite began life in 2012 as a small coffee shop in Edinburgh. When Peter, a young man experiencing homelessness, came in to ask for a job, a bold new journey began. Now, with our amazing network of donors, fundraisers, volunteers, and partner businesses across the UK, we’re pushing for nothing less than an end to homelessness. One innovative idea at a time.

Girls’ Attitudes Survey 2018 for Girlguiding

Girlguiding is the leading charity for girls and young women in the UK. Having worked with the charity as a writer, editor and proofreader since 2017, the client asked me to come up with a fresh approach to its Girls' Attitudes Survey as it marked its 10th year. Taking the statistics they provided, I came up with chapters that reflected key findings and wrote short 'then' copy and longer 'now' copy to emphasise the differences. The client was delighted with the final product.

#ChristmasInLeeds

Recent work has included writing copy for sections of the 'Christmas in Leeds' website. #ChristmasInLeeds is a LeedsBID project designed to guide people around Leeds city centre by showcasing local creative talent and sharing festive moments. This project is one of many initiatives brought to the city by Leeds Business Improvement District (LeedsBID). I work with the Marketing, Communications & Brand team on a weekly basis. LeedsBID is a business-led, not-for-profit organisation and represents 1,000 organisations.

Clear, accessible web copy for an ADHD charity

Here's a brief extract from one of the resources pages: ADHD types and symptoms We're all different, and ADHD shows up differently for everyone, but three core traits sit at the heart of the condition: inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity. These traits often show up in childhood in the following ways: • Inattention: easily distracted, struggles with concentration, difficulty staying organised • Impulsivity: impatience, risk-taking, disproportionate emotional responses • Hyperactivity: restless energy, constant talking, fidgeting, difficulty staying on task It's common for these behaviours to present differently across genders. For example, boys are often more physically hyperactive – hence the outdated stereotype of the disruptive, naughty boy. On the other hand, girls may appear quiet and inattentive, due to mental hyperactivity that can result in daydreaming or emotional overwhelm.

Email marketing for The Charity for Civil Servants

We have provided regular copywriting and editing services for this fantastic national charity, which provides support for public workers in times of extreme hardship, ranging from mental health advice through to financial help. As part of this collaboration, we've produced content for fundraising brochures, posters, leaflets weekly emails to staff. As an example, we developed the creative concepts for a 'superhero' campaign designed to support skills swapping amongst civil servants. It was great fun producing characters such as 'The Cake Crusader' and 'Professor X-cel', as well as putting together all the related marketing collateral.
